10 Weird Fruit You Might Not Have Heard Of
It is always been fascinating how bizarre things mother-nature and evolution have managed to come up with. From strange animals to amazingly weird plant-life, nature has it all. In fact, even in the tamer world of fruit, there are apparently some bizarre options available. Here are a list of them.
1. Buddha's Hand
Buddha's hand is the strangest of all fruits. Though it is a citrus fruits, people don't consume it as a fruit due to its awful appearance. This is why it is mostly used as an embellishment in rooms to perfume them as it gives out an awesome citrus scent.
2. Kiwano
Kiwano or horned melon/cucumber is a hybrid of different fruits. It contains a hint of lime, cucumber and banana. Not only is this fruit interesting in its appearance, its taste is also unique. Kiwano's peel is a combination of yellow and orange and its' shape is oval, just like a kiwi.
3. Passion Fruit
This peculiar-shaped fruit originates from South America. The most dangerous thing about passion fruit is that its skin has shown some traces of poison, cyanogenic glycosides. The poison's little quantity is not harmful for the human health and is believed to be the same found in apple seeds.
4. Akebia Quinata
The first thing that comes to the mind after seeing this odd-looking sausage-shaped fruit is that; something is being attacked with flies. However, unlike Durian, it doesn't smell peculiar. New Zealand has declared this fruit as virulent and has banned its sale.
5. Rambutan
Rambutan is a fruit with tentacle-like threads protruding out of its skin. Though this fruit is delicious in taste and Southeast Asians make jellies and jams from it, its seeds are mildly poisonous.
6. Atemoya
Atemoya is a hybrid of Cherimoya and Sugar Apples. The strange fact about this tasty fruit is that from 2-4 pm, its flowers are female while, from 3-5pm, on alternate days, they are male. What make this fruit more horrible are its poisonous and inedible seeds.
7. Dragon Fruit
This fruit is strange in an amazing way. It looks like a beautiful decorative flame from the outside and resembles a dragon on the inside. When cut into two equal halves it demonstrates the picture of vanilla ice-cream with a sprinkle of some dead fruit flies. The taste of Pitaya or dragon fruit is similar to that of a watermelon and is really popular in different parts of East Asia.
8. Durian
Durian or 'The King of Fruit' smells like a rotten onion or garbage. Its stinky smell is so powerful that one can smell it from yards away. Human beings rarely eat this malodorous fruit, however, animals, especially tigers love Durians.
9. Screw Pine
Screw pine or Pandanus is another fruit that has an unusual shape. It is used for a number of purposes, ranging from dyeing to eating.
10. Snakeskin Fruit
A little pinch on this fruit's end can slough off its skin. However, when the snake-skin of the fruit is removed, it no longer looks like a snake. In fact, the peeled fruit looks like a garlic clove.
